Madonna wins second John Rouse award

Madonna Jonhera BSc MSc has been awarded the second John Rouse award by the Eve Brook Scholarship Fund. This award was founded in memory of our Treasurer John Rouse, who died in 2022, and supports EBSF beneficiaries in their careers after graduating.

During Madonna’s undergraduate course in Medical Physiology at Leicester, the Fund financed her overseas study placement in Oregon, and then granted her a post-graduate bursary to help with her masters course in Immunity, Infection and Chronic Disease, again at Leicester. As part of that course, Madonna developed an app to help people with from the cancer-predisposing genetic condition Lynch’s Syndrome, and co-wrote an academic paper in the British Medical Journal  to explain how it works. Empowering people with Lynch’s to manage their own condition, the app provides a dashboard which alerts patients to the treatments, therapies and tests they should be taking.

Now she has graduated (with distinction) Madonna has completed another article on the Lynch’s project for an American publication. Researchers have to pay for their articles to be included in scientific journals (“that’s the system”). Her John Rouse award financed the publication of her new article, and advanced her future career.
